The DS161 combines power with wide angle coverage to give you the most bang for your buck.
The quality of light is exceptional due to a round flash tube and custom powder coated reflector designed specifically to deliver the softest, most even coverage possible. Strobes with a straight flashtube may be capable of high powers, but require the addition of a diffuser to spread out their sharp, rectangular beam pattern and reduce the harsh hot spot. The DS161 beam is designed to be perfectly soft and wide spread through its reflector design, and is capable of providing you the coverage and power you want and avoiding the one f/stop loss caused by adding a diffuser.
Both DS160 and DS161 strobes are legendary for their ability to keep up in rapid firing situations—a cut above any flash on the market. Electrical sync connection and a high-capacity battery pack provide the speed you need to capture fast moving subjects like sharks and sailfish at just the right millisecond.
When combined with a compatible TTL system, the DS161 automatically adjusts brightness to provide perfect exposure whether you're shooting macro, portrait or wide angle. Instead of a simple aiming light, the DS161 includes a super even, 500 lumen video light. The light is suitable for close-up, macro, portrait, and wide angle fill-in work or as a focus assist light. Output is adjustable in 10 brightness settings plus an SOS mode for emergency situations. Automatic shut-off when the flash fires ensures that the video light will have no undesired effects on still photos.
NiMH batteries are work horses, and a great choice for high powered rechargeable devices due to their performance and reliability at a more affordable price point than lithium ion. This high capacity battery pack provides professional quality power and speed flash after flash, well beyond the capabilities of even the best AA-cell batteries.
Shooting full power flashes? Expect a lightning fast 1.6 second recycle time and over 225 flashes on a single charge. Shooting TTL or in a fractional power setting? You'll get very close to instantaneous recycle time and up to 3X as many flashes... plenty for a day of diving! This battery recharges in half the time of its Li-Ion counterpart for quick topping off before your night dive.
Our famous quick-release toggle system attaches the battery pack with ease and confidence, making a flooded battery virtually impossible.
The included Smart Charger for NiMH accepts variable voltage in the 100-240V range and includes AC adapters for US, Europe, UK and Australia. Smart charging provides safety and helps to increase the lifetime of the pack by switching over to a trickle charge when the battery pack is fully recharged. Feedback on charging cycle is indicated by an LED on the front of the charger.
This charger is compatible with NiMH and NiCad battery packs only. Smart Chargers designed for NiMH or NiCad batteries cannot be used with Li-Ion technology.

TTL or "Through-The-Lens" flash metering means the strobe interprets information from the camera to control flash duration and properly expose an image. TTL may be accomplished directly through electrical signals from the camera, or indirectly through watching the behavior of the camera's built-in flash.
Circuitry built into this housing allows the camera to communicate directly with compatible underwater strobes (see Strobe Compatibility section below). When connected via this circuitry, the camera learns that an external flash is attached and is able to more accurately adjust exposure by knowing this. The camera's flash will not fire, eliminating the shutter lag associated with waiting for the camera's flash to recycle.
The Ikelite-style electrical bulkhead is widely recognized as the most reliable waterproof strobe sync connection available. In order to communicate with the camera, compatible Ikelite DS strobes must be connected to the housing's electrical bulkhead using a single or dual TTL sync cord.
Non-Ikelite strobes may be connected to this bulkhead using a compatible sync cord, however the housing's circuitry will not receive power and the strobes will operate in manual exposure modes only.
Whether in TTL or manual exposure, use of an electrical sync cord eliminates the issues of signal interference, inconsistent exposure due to weak fiber optic transmission, and false triggering caused by light rays bouncing off the water's surface or your buddy's flash going off. Sync cords are comparably priced to fiber optic cords and are equally durable.
Durable polycarbonate and acrylic construction provides a unique view of the camera to ensure correct waterproof installation and confidence underwater. Simply close the two stainless steel locking lid snaps, and see the o-ring form a solid black, watertight seal. Large, ergonomic controls provide access to all important camera functions including front and rear dials. The housing port is designed to accept color filter, wide angle, and macro options for 3.9-inch diameter ports. Light is absorbed very quickly as it passes through water. A subject will look darker, less colorful and somewhat grainy when viewed through even a few feet of water. The addition of a compatible wide angle accessory expands the camera's field of view underwater, providing the opportunity to get as close as possible to the subject and reduce the amount of water light passes through. The results speak for themselves - photos with the best color, exposure and clarity possible.

Trigger your Ikelite DS-series strobe off any camera or strobe flash. The Optical Slave Converter simply attaches to the strobe's electrical bulkhead in place of a sync cord connector. The enlarged slave window provides approximately 90 degrees field of view for remote triggering. Recommended if wireless slave triggering is your primary application.
The Optical Slave Converter can be extended using the optional 3-foot Extension Cord for creative backlighting in wrecks, caves, and pool studio set-ups. It can also be used above water for studio photography work.
The Optical Slave Converter supports manual exposure modes as set on the attached DS strobe. TTL exposure mode is not supported.
An individual Optical Slave Converter is needed for each strobe. Use of multiple strobes requires one Optical Slave Converter per strobe. The Optical Slave Converter supports DS50, DS51, DS125, DS160 and DS161 strobes.
The included fiber optic port threads onto the front of the Remote Optical Slave Converter for the attachment of and triggering via a fiber optic cord. This Converter is sensitive enough to fire the strobe via fiber optic cable with most camera flashes. It is not recommended for use with LED fiber optic triggers by Nauticam, SEA&SEA, and other manufacturers.
The Optical Slave Converter automatically configures itself for compatibility with both pre-flash and non pre-flash camera modes. No setting of small switches or confusion over number of pre-flashes. Simply turn on your strobe and take one picture to configure.
