: I have a Nikonos V and SB-102 that I have been using for the past two years and recently I decided to get a backup strobe, a SB-105. I know that I can slave either strobe with the other but I'm wondering for simplicity, would it be better to pop for a double sync cord and use TTL on both units. Thanks for your input. Rich
Rich:
The advantage of a dual TTL set-up is just that, balanced TTL control of both strobes, with the SB-102 as your primary and the SB-105 as fill. Also, both strobes will fire regardless of where the slave sensor is pointed.
With the SB-102 on TTL and the SB-105 on manual slave, you set the power output of the 105, and the camera will TTL control the exposure based on the combination of the two light sources. This will work properly as long as the manual output of the SB-105 doesn't overpower the variable output of the SB-102. This set up will save the cost of the dual TTL cord, although you will still need a dual tray.
